Why Does Autocorrect Still Suck?

Narrator: Have you ever tried typing something but your phone keeps changing it to something else? This ducking keyboard can be so frustrating! It can seem like autocorrect is working against you instead of helping you. But the iPhone has had autocorrect for over 10 years. Why does it still suck? Whether you're on iPhone or Android, using the default keyboard or a third-party app you deal with autocorrect every single day. Usually, it works great but sometimes it completely refuses to understand what you typed. To figure out what's happening we have to understand how autocorrect works. When you type something on a phone there's a lot of work going on in the background. The phone analyzes your input and compares it to stored dictionaries and language models. The phone then tries to correctly interpret the word or phrase you're trying to type. So when you type "fopd" your phone changes it to "food" because "fopd" isn't a word but it's only one letter away from "food." But not every example is this obvious.

Ken Kocienda: The vowels U, I, and O are very close to each other so a word like put, pit, and pot those, those were real challenges.

Narrator: That's Ken Kocienda, he's one of the people who developed autocorrect for Apple. We spoke with Ken to find out what's happening inside of autocorrect.

Ken Kocienda: My job was to come up with a way to make speedy and accurate typing possible on a sheet of glass.

Narrator: The hardest part isn't correcting spelling or grammar, it's interpreting what you meant to say from what you wrote. And autocorrect is actually pretty good at this but users tend to notice autocorrect only when it makes mistakes.

Ken Kocienda: If it does what it's supposed to do 19 times and then that 20th time it makes a mistake that is either distracting or embarrassing, that one mistake wipes out the positive feelings that people have for the 19 times where it just worked.

Narrator: This is especially obvious when autocorrect leads to unwanted changes. Sometimes it can feel like you're fighting against your keyboard.

Ken Kocienda: Mostly people complain about how autocorrect gets in the way of their swearing. The ducking keyboard.

Narrator: The iPhone keyboard will let you swear, it just wants to prevent you from accidentally sending a word that you didn't mean to send. It might seem like you're always wrestling with autocorrect, but you can take control of your dictionary. On iOS go into Settings, General, Keyboard, and then tap "Add Shortcut" or "Text Replacement." Here you can add a new word or a shortcut that fills in a word when you type a few letters. You can Google around to find out how to add words to the various versions of Android or third-party keyboards. So, you might still think autocorrect sucks but it's actually gotten a lot better since version one and some developers have introduced new tools like swipe to type to make typing on a smartphone easier. In the future, machine learning might create an autocorrect that's more accurate than ever but whatever the technology is we can't lose sight of the original goal of autocorrect.

Ken Kocienda: The goal that I like to think about for the product is for it to have the software melt away. Autocorrection is not supposed to be glamorous, right? It's just supposed to be useful.

Narrator: Autocorrect is far from perfect but our messages would look a lot worse without it.

NASA created this half a million gallon fountain as part of a test for its Space Launch System, scheduled to launch for the first time in 2020.

Why NASA Spews Out Half A Million Gallons Of Water During Rocket Launches

Alex Appolonia: This is almost half a million gallons of water being blasted a hundred feet into the air.

The most impressive part? It was all done in just 60 seconds.

NASA created the massive fountain as part of a test for its Space Launch System, scheduled to launch for the first time in 2020.

It will be the largest, most powerful rocket NASA has ever built. Standing upright, the SLS will reach 322 feet in height, 17 feet taller than the Statue of Liberty, and weigh almost 6 million pounds.

Its first planned mission? A 25-day trip around the moon.

When it lifts off, its engines will generate 8.4 million pounds of force and sound waves so powerful that they could easily destroy the rocket from the ground up.

That's where NASA's Ignition Overpressure and Sound Suppression System comes in. NASA projects the water onto and over the launchpad during ignition and liftoff. This not only protects the ground from the rocket's engines it also prevents the sound waves from bouncing off the ground and back up which could cause catastrophic damage to the engines. The system also prevents the giant flames generated by the engines from catching anything on fire.

During an actual launch, some of the water will evaporate due to the extreme heat, while the rest exits through nozzles. This test is just one of many more that NASA will conduct over the coming months in preparation for the rocket's first launch.

The SLS is designed for deeper space missions able to explore far beyond Earth's orbit. It can carry astronauts in an Orion capsule, or ferry other cargo, like exploratory robots, to distant worlds like Jupiter and Mars. Pretty impressive, huh?

This latest test, performed in the beginning of October, was to evaluate any needed upgrades, like corrosion control, renovating the water storage tank, and checking the conditions of the pipes and valves. Now, it will be in tip-top shape for when the SLS is ready to make its debut flight in 2020.

How Amazon’s Alexa Is Taking Over Your House

Dennis Green: Amazon wants Alexa everywhere, so it can build this ecosystem that customers are kind of trapped in. They've got clocks, they've got timers, they've got microwaves, all Alexa-enabled. And it's really like a bid to own the home. In the end, the consumer kind of loses in this spat.

So Amazon's kind of putting Alexa in everything because it wants this fully featured experience for customers that's completely seamless. If you need popcorn for your microwave, you run out, you know, it'll automatically order it for you. If you want to rent a movie it's right there, you can just press rent and it's immediately on your screen. You want to hear any music, any song, just say the word and Alexa will deliver it for you. It's this ecosystem that makes it easier in the system than outside of the system. It's frictionless, which means that money can flow freely from your pocket to Amazon via Alexa.

This fragmented ecosystem can sometimes cause problems for customers. For example, Amazon doesn't allow Google to sell its home devices on Amazon.com and in response, Google blocked YouTube from both Amazon's Fire and Echo devices. However, Alexa can still be useful to the Amazon flywheel. Instead of focusing on physical retail, it's focusing on digital retail.

When Amazon first unveiled its Alexa platform it was kind of supposed to be this voice shopping experience that customers would love where they could just ask for toilet paper and it would be delivered in two days. That future hasn't really materialized. We're seeing a lot of data that shoppers are not actually using the platform for voice shopping. Instead they're using it for both entertainment and utility. That means rent movies or subscribe to an unlimited music service, or, you know, use the smart home features to turn lights on and off and things like that.

You can see this in the Smart Plug device that they've developed, where you can plug it into the wall and Alexa will immediately recognize it and you just say, "Yes, I want to set it up," and then it's done. This is definitely a bid to kind of bring in that consumer that's maybe a little bit afraid of the connected home, a little bit afraid of voice commands, a little bit afraid of that whole thing. It wants people to be comfortable enough to, you know, that your grandmother could do it.

And so Amazon keeps adding new features to its Alexa platform. A lot of that is with hardware and a lot of that is with software. A software example is this Amazon Guard feature that Amazon unveiled earlier in September. Amazon Guard uses artificial intelligence to kind of intelligently turn your lights on and off, to kind of ward off intruders. And Alexa enables Amazon to do a lot of other stuff, even with its e-commerce platform. Amazon earlier this year unveiled its Amazon Key service, which allows Prime customers to actually get their packages delivered inside their house.

Alexa does enable Amazon to kind of own this smart home space early. It's kind of gotten there before any of its competitors and it's kind of cemented itself, especially with all of these new devices coming out, as kind of the leader. I could see them adding things like with the Kindle, where they have an addition that has advertisements for a lower price or just you know, advertising things that you might want to buy that you could just say, "Amazon, buy the thing that's on the screen right now," and kind of monetizing it that way. But I'm sure we haven't seen anything yet.

NASA's about to break new ground like never before, by sending a giant drill to Mars. It's the largest drill NASA has ever sent to space, and it will dig deeper into Mars than ever before. The mission? Uncover clues to one of the most outstanding mysteries in our solar system.

NASA's $850 million InSight Lander is the first designed to study the interior structure of Mars. Until now, NASA's landers mainly focused on exploring Mars' surface for signs of potential life. They've touched down near volcanoes, valleys, and canyons. But InSight won't be going anywhere like that, since InSight is not a rover and can't move around. NASA has one shot to land it in the perfect spot, here! Elysium Planitia, sometimes referred to as the biggest parking lot on Mars. It's one of the plainest spots NASA could find and the perfect place for InSight. For one, it's close to the equator, guaranteeing the solar panels that power InSight's instruments will work year-round for its nearly two-year mission. But most importantly, that smooth surface will make it easier for InSight's drill to bore deep into the Martian soil.

The drill works like a motorized nail, hammering itself into the ground. Over the course of 40 days, the drill will reach 16 feet into the planet. That's roughly the length of a car. For comparison, NASA's Curiosity Rover only dug about half an inch deep. That's the length of an aspirin pill. As InSight digs, it will occasionally shoot out bursts of heat. By calculating how quickly that heat warms the ground around it, InSight can measure the chemical makeup of the soil. But InSight's drill pulls double duty. As it hammers away, it also sends vibrations through the ground, which are sensitive to different layers that might be hiding under the surface. For example, if Mars has underground lava flows, those vibrations will find them. But this only gives NASA clues to the shallower layers of Mars. To understand the deep inner core, InSight has another tool that will measure how much Mars wobbles on its axis. It works similar to an egg. If you spin an uncooked egg, the liquid yolk will slosh around making the egg wobble. But if the inside is cooked, there's less wobble. Similarly, how much Mars wobbles can tell us whether its core is molten liquid or solid metal.

And all these clues can help scientists solve a bigger mystery of how rocky planets like Mars and Earth formed in the first place. By studying the interior of Mars, scientists can get a better grasp on how Mars has evolved over billions of years from a warm, wet world to the desolate landscape it is today. But there's an even bigger objective on the horizon. Ultimately, the more we know about our own solar system, the better we get at searching for other planets beyond our solar system that may have the potential to harbor life.
